Viola at YSM
The viola program at the Yale School of Music stresses the overriding importance of musical language as well as technical mastery of the instrument, all within a collaborative and supportive environment. The search for beauty in performance is the ultimate goal; the production of an expressive sound and an acute awareness of phrasing in interpretation are also constantly kept in mind. Students are encouraged to explore a broad variety of repertoire, including contemporary music. Weekly studio seminars focus on a range of topics, from specific technical issues to more general discussions.
All violists participate in chamber music, an integral part of the Yale School of Music experience. Students also play in various ensembles in the New Music New Haven concert series, and in the School’s orchestra, the Yale Philharmonia, which offers the experience of performing a wide variety of repertoire under the leadership of acclaimed guest conductors.
