Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments

Research Opportunities

Music meets discovery.

The Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments is a unique asset within Yale’s rich musical environment, offering many different resources to students. Classes at the School of Music and the Department of Music attend presentations at the Collection and students are encouraged to make appointments to conduct research involving the close examination of objects or to explore the Collection’s archives. The museum also maintains a circulating collection of instruments, including replicas of period instruments, for the use of Yale students and faculty.

The Collection is free and open to the public during regular museum hours, concerts, and other events.

The Collection maintains a selection of instruments for the use of Yale students on campus. These instruments have object numbers beginning with “CC” (owned by the Collection), or “YSM” (owned by the Yale School of Music).

Qualified students may borrow these instruments for specified periods, free of charge. All such loans must be approved by a School of Music faculty member and by the Collection director. School of Music students will be given priority for instrument loans, but instruments can also be borrowed, subject to availability, by undergraduates and graduate students from other Yale schools. Current Yale School of Music students and faculty may find the relevant forms on ArtsVision.
