Partnerships with New Haven Public Schools
At the core of Music in Schools is a partnership with the New Haven Public Schools.
The Music in Schools Initiative collaborates with the New Haven Public Schools to provide paraprofessional support in music classrooms, All-City Ensemble opportunities, and the annual Morse Summer Music Academy. Each program fosters relationships between instructors and students while facilitating students' musical development through active music-making, performing, and responding to music. These programs cultivate a dynamic community between New Haven students, music educators, and Yale School of Music students, providing paraprofessional support as Teaching Artists.
More Information
All-City Ensembles
In this city-wide program, NHPS students from grades 3-12 rehearse weekly with their given ensembles. The All-City Ensembles are conducted by NHPS music educators and YSM Teaching Artists in preparation for final concerts at the end of each academic semester. NHPS students of any level of experience can participate in All-City Band (brass, percussion, woodwinds), All-City Strings (violin, viola, cello, guitar), or All-City Choir. Rehearsals are held in various locations, including the Neighborhood Music School, the Yale School of Music, and the Yale Divinity School. All activities are free of charge. Please complete this form to apply for participation in the All-City Ensembles. See FAQ for eligibility.
Teaching Artist/Paraprofessional Support
The Music in Schools Initiative works with New Haven Public School music teachers to supply (when available) in-school, paraprofessional support. Our Teaching Artists, who are also YSM students, assist NHPS music educators with private or small group lessons by instrument, following the plan and guidance of the NHPS music educators. Teachers interested in requesting a Teaching Artist for paraprofessional support can complete this form.

The Morse Summer Music Academy is a monthlong, intensive music program for New Haven Public Schools students in grades 3-11. The program is free and offers private lessons, public performance opportunities, education and mentorship in music theory, creative music making, large ensemble instruction, and chamber ensemble instruction.
